VSO presents MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents the second Back to the Movies performance of the 2025/26 season. Played with live accompaniment by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra chamber ensemble.
This consciously radical documentary of life in the Soviet Union was filmed in Russia and Ukraine over several years by Dziga Vertov. A film proudly without actors or plot, it is an hour-long montage of scenes of people working, playing, and travelling, and becomes self-referential when it shows itself being made and presented in a theater. Rodney Sauer followed Vertov's instructions to create a score that is forward-looking but still rooted firmly in 1929, using music that was available to musicians at the time, and accompanied by improvised sound effects.
This feature will be preceded by a short comedy:
The Cameraman's Revenge (1912)
In an early animated short comedy by Ladislav Starevich, a grasshopper and an adulterous beetle are rivals for a dragonfly cabaret dancer.
Admission is $25. $10 student tickets are available at the door.silent film, documentaryPT1H20M2026-01-22Dziga Vertov
